Farrokh Jazizadeh, Ph.D.

Dr. Farrokh Jazizadeh is an Assistant Professor at the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the founding Director of INFORM Lab at Virginia Tech. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Informatics for Intelligent Built Environment, MSc in Computer Science, and MSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California. He has also received BSc and MSc from IUT and AUT in Iran, respectively.

Milad Afzalan

Milad is a Ph.D. student at the Charles Edward Via department of civil engineering. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he obtained his bachelor and master degree in civil engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran in 2013, and 2015, respectively. Milad’s research interests lay at the intersection of intelligent cyber-physical systems through data sensing, control of building systems, and infrastructure operational analytics.

Dissertation: Decentralized HVAC Operations: Novel Intelligent Sensing and Control for Human-Aware Operations

Wooyoung is a Ph.D. candidiate with research interests at the intersection of intelligent building systems and non-intrusive bio-sensing. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he received his bachelor and master degrees in architectural engineering from Yonsei University, South Korea in 2011 and 2016, respectively. His previous research focused on Building Information Modeling (BIM) adoption and implementation. He also has industry experience at Daewoo Engineering & Construction company for three years as a scheduler and a field engineer.

Farnaz Khaghani

Farnaz is a Ph.D. student with particular interests in using social networks data for urban scale studies and improvement of infrastructures towards sustainable urbanism. Prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech, she received a master degree in construction management from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, with the focus on employing multi-task labor and also research in real options analysis in Energy Performance Contracts (EPC). While studying for her master degree, Farnaz worked at Fara Gostar Bistoon, Tehran, Iran, as the project manager and also the manager of the production planning department.

His research focuses on distributed energy management and energy network modeling at the city scale. In his spare time, he enjoys reading books, listening to music, and hiking.

James has been an MSc student at VCEMP since Fall 2019. He has received his BSc in Civil Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 2019. He is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and has experience in building residential housing and project management. His research interests are in the implementation of Virtual and Augmented Reality into the AEC industry and the industry's current perceived value and understanding of such technologies.

His research interests mainly lie in areas of human-aware environments, sensing, and smart operations.

Jue was a junior student in Civil Engineering when joined the lab as an undergraduate researcher in 2015. His research was focused on non-intrusive monitoring of the building energy systems by enabling ambient-sensor-assisted and self-configuring machine learning algorithms.

Alex was a senior in Civil Engineering with a minor in Green Engineering. She is from Smithfield, Virginia and upon graduation will begin work in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She believes sustainability is of utmost importance and she looks forward to applying the aspects of sustainability in both her professional and personal life. 

Erika Pleczynski

Erika was a senior in civil engineering graduated in spring 2018. Starting June 2018, she will be working full-time with Pennoni as a municipal engineer at their King of Prussia, PA office. In her spare time, she likes to hike or play music with old friends, and she has also played alto sax for VT’s Campus Band for the past 4 spring semesters.
